Zero Youth Fare Update!
Riders 18 and younger can now take transit for free thanks to Move Ahead Washington, a statewide transportation funding package.
Riders age 13 and older are encouraged to show one of the following to the driver, if they have it:
Youth ORCA Card
- Please “tap” your card when you board. On Sound Transit light rail, please also “tap” when you exit.
- If you kept the Youth ORCA card issued by your school during the 2021-22 academic year, it will continue to work through June 30, 2023.
Current High School or Middle School Student ID
Youth who do not have one of these can still ride for free.
In 2023 and beyond, youth will be directed to get a Free Youth Transit Pass that allows them to tap a card—or eventually their smartphone—to access transit across the region for free. Learn more about the free youth transit on Sound Transit's website, linked here, and myORCA, linked here
COVID-19 Update: This service is operating with safety measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
Masks on transit recommended. Masks are no longer required by King County Metro, but still strongly recommended. Gloves are still provided, there are partitions in place between the driver and riders, and the vehicles are sanitized after each use.
What is Community Van?
Community Van is a rideshare pilot program brought to Sammamish by King County Metro in partnership with the City of Sammamish, to provide community members with a new way to share a ride. This service promotes shared rides, either one-time or recurring, to popular destinations throughout the region. Trips must be scheduled in advance through your Community Transportation Coordinator (CTC) and requested either by contacting your CTC or online.
How does it work?
- Community members can travel together in King County Metro vans to local destinations throughout the day, evening and weekends.
- Riders fill out a trip request form or contact their CTC at least two business days in advance.
- There is a two-passenger minimum on Community Van trips according to King County Metro's standard capacity requirements.
- Each rider will pay a Metro one-zone fare for the round trip while the driver travels for free.
- Accessible community vans are available upon request. Inform the CTC about your needs before your trip.
How do I pay?
Fares are round trip and are priced at one zone off-peak, which is $2.75.

What is School Pool?
Sammamish SchoolPool is in partnership between City of Sammamish, local schools, and King County Metro to carry out Safe Routes to School efforts and reduce traffic on our streets. SchoolPool is a way for cities and schools to make it safer, easier and more fun for families to get to school by walking, rolling (such as biking, using a wheelchair, scooting) or carpooling.
How to get your school involved in SchoolPool
Interested in routinely walking, biking, or carpooling to and/or from school with other families?
- Connect with your school administration or PTA to see if your school is participating or to ask for school participation. The City of Sammamish will help facilitate the implementation of the program in new schools. You can contact the Community Transportation Coordinator to help get your school started by email or calling (425) 295-0646.
- Check out King County Metro's Safe Routes Toolkit here and get involved!
- Once connected, help your school organize fun events like "Walk and Roll to School Day" or "Cocoa for Carpools" and promote safe, environmentally friendly ways to get to and from school.
- Reach out to the City of Sammamish to create a network on Sammamish’s RideShare Online SchoolPool tool to join an existing group or to form a new group. This is a free, safe and secure web-based tool that matches student families at the same or nearby schools who wish to travel together by walking or biking groups or carpooling.
